I’m an independent voter, and I am terrified of Sarah Palin. Actually, no—it’s people who support Sarah Palin that strike fear in my heart.
I live in Massachusetts, so I have never actually met a Palin supporter, but I know they exist. I watched the National Tea Party Convention in February, and at one point Judson Phillips, the convention organizer, mentioned that “two words...scare liberals: President Palin.” In response, the crowd erupted, with people springing to their feet and chanting “Run Sarah, Run!” Palin soaked in the fervid cheers, smirking in that folksy, “aw shucks, I’m the greatest” way of hers. It was a disquieting spectacle.

Shi Tai, Li Zhi and Jiang Lijun currently are sitting out 8-10 year sentences in Chinese prisons for promoting multiparty democracy in one-party China. The mistake that put them in jail was trusting that the contents of their email accounts would be kept out of sight of officials from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) . In 2004, CCP government officials learned that the men were using their Yahoo accounts to send information about pro-democracy groups in China. The government simply asked Yahoo who was sending the messages, and Yahoo—eager to please such a large client—meekly disclosed the information.

But moral outrage is just as wrong for the debate as partisan politics or religious conviction. Americans must recognize that facilitating the resolution of the Middle East conflict is a fundamental matter of our own national security.

We look to the mistakes of the past to learn and become less likely to repeat them. However, in passing the healthcare bill, we have made the same mistake that we did in passing the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act. Once again, we have ignored the true issue (federal vs. state priority in governance) and focused on the current big-ticket problem (now healthcare, then slavery).

U.S.-Israeli Relations: Signs of a Shifting Tide |

We have stood by Israel through thick and thin since its creation at the end of World War II. Whether it is because of the horrors of the Holocaust or because of its strategic value as a counterweight to rogue states in the Middle East, we have consistently fought their battles for them, and as Israel is the only stable democracy in the area, we are right to do so.
